History of Modern Viennese Waltz:
The Viennese waltz, which is a kind of a ballroom dance, is considered to be the national dance of Austria and most Austrians dance into the New Year with the most popular Vienna waltz of “Johann Strauss the Younger.” Viennese waltz was not a popular dance earlier as it was thought to be a very naughty dance and it could not be danced by decent young girls. Only married women could waltz before the French Revolution. Modern Viennese waltz is a comparatively fast dance for ballroom and it is also very popular in Paris. (VIENNA WALTZ: THE NATIONAL DANCE OF AUSTRIA)
Modern Viennese waltz is the original form of the waltz and the first form of a ballroom dance which is performed in the closed hold position. The popular Waltz is the slow waltz or the English which is performed at 90 beats/minute and three beats to the bar but the Viennese Waltz is performed at approximately 180 beats/minute. And even today, the words “valse” or “Walzer” are not used for the slow waltz; but they refer to the original dance. The Viennese Waltz is performed in circles where the dancers continuously turn either in an anti-clockwise or clockwise direction while taking turns and changing steps. As the Waltz started, a few of the versions performed at about the original fast tempo began to be termed as “Viennese Waltz” for distinguishing them from the slower versions of waltz. The American Style and the International Style of Viennese Waltz are recognized in the modern ballroom dance today. (Viennese Waltz)
