Bronze Salon Tango:
Picture Gomez & Morticia Addams of The Addams Family tangoing around the living room of their Gothic mansion. She with the stem of a rose in her teeth, he with a look of lust in his eyes. Even when television scary (and funny) people Tango, one can feel the passion, see the intimacy. More than any other dance, the Tango is about obsession and connection. Partners dance close enough to feel each other's body, close enough that it could lead to ardor they never knew they could experience. That is if the couple is dancing the salon style Argentine tango. “It has been called a conversation without words. Yet it explores one's deepest self and brings the innermost passions and desires to the fore, for all to see. It's not for wimps, nor is it necessarily the flash of stage tango either” (Jake). In Argentina, they call it “the embrace” for good reason.
All over the world, Tango is known on the international style, the performance style, the less physical style of dance. In Buenos Aries, Tango means the salon style. This style Tango actually combined a couple of local styles, the orillero style and the milongero style, into salon style tango, the closer embrace style (Trenner). To dance the salon style Argentine tango requires improvisation based on what one’s partner is doing. Partners try to respond to what one another is feeling and doing on the dance floor. Other dances have a pattern of steps that repeats over and over. However, the tango, the true tango from Argentina, does not. The only “rule” in salon style Tango is to take one step per beat of the music. One partner is the lead, but that can shift at least momentarily. Basic steps include walking forward, walking back, side steps and pivots, and, there is one set pattern to salon style Argentine tango “Walking to the Cross,” which just describes the necessary shifting of feet position from the outside track to the inside track via the middle.
