It is hard to overstate the importance of proper footwear for dancing. The aspiring social dancer is used to normal walking, lean and fall in the desired direction. Quality movement however, requires a much greater awareness of foot contact with the floor. The ability to move in time to music, synchronized with a partner and avoiding other dancers requires that both feet remain in contact with the floor. Both feet… this means that to travel one or both feet must be able to slide. So what does that entail in a dance shoe?
1) Grip, or rather less grip. Sneakers and Combat boots won’t slide.
2) Lightness, Since we cannot use just the big muscles of the thigh, the smaller movements of the knees ankles and feet will quickly tire the dancer who is wearing more bulky street shoes.
3) Form Fitting: Foot articulation is essential to the beginning as well as advanced dancer for control, non “bendy” shoes won’t do.
Dance shoes will vary by dance styling. Such as Smooth (Standard), Rhythm (Latin), Lindy Hop or Argentine.
